  2. Welcome! • Introduction • College Priorities • Why Go Greek • KU Greek Community • My Greek Experience • Q&A

  3. Let’s Talk Priorities…… 1st thing is 1st…. The # 1 reason why you are going to KU is to get an education and to graduate! Becoming a member of the KU Greek Community can help you along the way…. and has many benefits.

  4. National Greek facts… ▪ 76% of all Congressmen and Senators belong to a fraternity. ▪ Of the nation’s 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by Greeks. ▪ 80% of Fortune 500 executives are fraternity members. ▪ A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/sorority graduate, while under 50% of all non-fraternity/sorority persons graduate. All but two Presidents since 1825 have been fraternity members.

  5. just the facts… • 71% of those listed in “Who’s Who in America” belong to a fraternity • All of the Apollo 11 Astronauts are Greek • 63% of the U.S. President’s Cabinet members since 1900 have been Greek. • 85% of Supreme Court Justices have been Greek • There are 750,000 undergraduate members in 12,000 chapters on more than 800 campuses in the USA and Canada….all with a common purpose and connection.

  6. Greek Life @ KU!

  7. Greek Life @KU… • A very strong Greek Community in the U.S. • Four Pillars of Greek Life: • Scholarship • Leadership • Friendship • Service • FACT: All KU Greek GPA has been higher than all University GPA for over 35 years! • FACT: Retention and graduation rate is higher among Greek members!

  8. Why Greek Life? What makes Greek life rewarding is that members are given the unique opportunity to interactwith and lead their peers. On average… • College student taking 15 credit hours per semester spend about 13 hours in the actual classroom each week. The other 155 hours are spent outside the class room…..

  9. Why go Greek? Let’s do the math…. There are 168 total hours in a 7 day/week Of the 168 hours…..per week ~13 hours are spent in class (15 credit hours per semester) ~39 hours are spent studying outside of class ~56 hours spent sleeping (8 hours/night) 108 total 168 – 108 = 60 hours a week

  10. Why go Greek? 60 hours per week.....doing what? Scholarship Leadership Service Brotherhood This is where Greeks excel!

  11. The Four Pillars of Greek Life Leadership Service Brotherhood Scholarship Greeks set the GPA standard! Rewarded for Great grades # 1 priority! Opportunity to give back and serve the Lawrence community Strong Chapter Philanthropies Greeks are heavily involved in campus organizations Opportunity to develop skills Strong friendships formed through brotherhood Common Interests and goals

  12. KU Greek Life Benefits…. • Over 3,000 KU Greek students with common goals • Social and professional networking opportunities • Alumni Networking opportunities • Rock Chalk Revue: Largest KU Student Philanthropy…. and a LOT of fun! Great way to meet women in sororities… Scholarship Greeks Excel! Better prepares you for graduation and life after college… Leadership Brotherhood Service

  13. The Positive Impact of the Greek Community…. • Fraternities and sororities are often associated with hazing, drinking and partying.  • Hazing scandals make headlines — and fundraisers and philanthropy events generally do not. • Partying is not the reason to commit to Greek life. • Students who join Greek organizations to build a network, make friends and develop leadership and social skills will likely graduate with useful qualities that will take them far in life.

  14. My Experience… • Great fraternity experience at KU! Learned a ton in those “60 hours” of free time a week! • Of the six groomsmen in my wedding all but 1 were my fraternity brothers. • Fraternity brothers now live all over the U.S., but we all still keep in touch on a regular basis. • Biggest lesson learned ….how to work beside and get along with people from different backgrounds with different views…. • Still involved today, serving as the Board President and advisor.

  15. I’ll leave you with this…. “Being in a fraternity teachesyou things you can’t learn in the classroom or by living elsewhere…” “Joining a fraternity is not just for your years in college, but is something that will be with you for your entire life….
