  4. Total War • War requiring the commitment of the entire society • The channeling of a nation’s entire resources into the war effort • Made necessary by modern, mechanized warfare

  5. Economics • Governments of warring nations raised taxes and borrowed huge amounts of money to fund their war efforts. • Food, clothing, gasoline and other items were rationed. • Governments set prices. • Governments forbid strikes by workers.

  6. Conscription • All warring nations in WW1 except Britain established a draft or mandatory military service for young men. • Germany established forced civilian labor

  7. Propaganda War • Total war required controlling public opinion. • Even democratic countries had censors who controlled the press, literature, the arts, movies. • Propaganda Wars used the spread of ideas to promote a cause or to damage an opposing cause. • Propaganda was used to fuel hatred for the enemy by accusing them of atrocities.

  8. Impact on Women • Women took over jobs previously only done by men. • Women worked in dangerous war industries and were sometimes injured or killed. • Women grew food to fight the British food shortages. • Women worked as nurses close to the front lines in danger of enemy fire, pests and disease. • Their efforts in the war helped women gain the vote.
