  3. Review: The Nazi-SovietNon-Aggression Pact, 1939 Germany & The Soviet Union vow not to fight each other.

  4. Poland Attacked: Sept. 1, 1939 • Bliztkrieg: German war plan that is FAST, SUDDEN, OVERWHELMING! • Includes airplanes, tanks, and troops. Blitzkrieg [“Lightening War”]

  6. The Fall of France • By June 14, 1940, Germans took Paris and eventually controlled all of northern France. “It is the duty of all Frenchmen who still bear arms to continue the struggle…” Charles de Gaulle

  8. Now Britain Is All Alone! • With the fall of France, new British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, vowed to never surrender. • Summer of 1940: Hitler’s Luftwaffe (German Air Force) is beating G.B.’s Royal Air Force (RAF).

  10. Where Is the United States? • U.S. begins selling war goods to European democracies. • FDR increases spending on U.S. military…war coming??

  11. U.S. Lend-Lease Act • FDR breaks two-term presidency… will be elected 4 times! • He gets Congress to pass the Lend-Lease Act in 1941 • U.S. supplies countries that are “vital to our interests.” • U.S. spent $50 billion under this act!!!

  14. The Atlantic Charter • August 1941: FDR and Winston Churchill meet in Canada. • They created the Atlantic Charter… which forms the basis of a “Declaration of the United Nations”. • 26 nations including the Soviet Union and China signed the charter.
