  1. English 10 Honors Day 10 Sit in any student desk for now. When class starts, I’ll rearrange you for the Socratic Seminar. Objective: To participate meaningfully in Socratic Seminar

  2. Rules • Look over the rules sheet on your desk. Make sure you understand all of them before you start. • You may write your notes on the back of the 3-2-1 chart.

  3. Group 1 • 1. How would the plot be affected if Old Major lived to see the rebellion?   • 2. What is the author’s attitude toward Napoleon’s rule? Provide evidence. • 3. Is the title effective? Why or why not? • 4. Throughout the novel, how is language used as an instrument of social control? (Consider Squealer’s speeches and the rewriting of history.) • 5. What is the importance of education in the novel? What is the difference between education and indoctrination as shown in the novel? • 6. What role does Boxer play on the farm? Why does Napoleon feel threatened by him? • 7. What is the overall tone of the novel? Provide evidence and explanation of this tone. • 8. What do you think happens after the end of the novel? • 9. Why does Orwell make the reader sympathize with all the animals except the pigs even though they’re the most intelligent and closest to humans? • 10. Compare and contrast Boxer and Mollie in regards to their obedience to Napoleon.

  4. Group 2 • 1. How would the story change if the other animals were as smart as the pigs? • 2. What is the purpose of the windmill to the plot? To the satirical elements? • 3. What would have happened if Snowball stayed on the farm, or even took leadership, instead of Napoleon? • 4. Would the animals be better off without a leader at all? Why or why not?   • 5. How does this satire apply to modern society? • 6. Is there ever a true threat of rebellion against Napoleon? Why or why not? • 7. Why did Orwell use the names he did? How do the names fit the characters? • 9. Which character do you feel is the noblest? Which animal would be best suited to lead a group against Napoleon and why? • 10. What are some potential themes of the novel?
