Internal Structure Of Roots • Cells in the apical meristem divide and then differentiate into the: • Root cap • Epidermis • Ground tissues • Vascular tissues Root
Internal Structure Of Roots • Root cap: protects the apical meristem of the soft actively growing root as it pushes through the soil
Internal Structure Of Roots • Root epidermis: extensions of root hairs, increase the roots surface area available for absorption of water and solutes
Internal Structure Of Roots • Vascular Tissues: form a vascular cylinder arranged as a central column of primary xylem and phloem • Pericycle: surrounds vascular cylinder and consist of parenchyma cells that actively divide perpendicular to the root axis giving rise to lateral roots • Endodermis: innermost layer of the cortex, surrounds the pericycle and forces water into the cytoplasm of root cells
