  1. Higher Order Modes and Wake-Fields in Superconducting Accelerating Cavities for the International Linear Collider Christopher Glasman Manchester Christmas Meeting 2006

  2. We stretch to the Cockcroft Institute: Daresbury Lab / Cockcroft Institute

  3. Based on the TESLA design from DESY. • Colliding e+e- at 500 GeV • Each Linac accelerates from 15 GeV to 250 GeV. In 11 km. • Achieved with a single pass through ~7000 cavities each with a 32MV/m gradient. About 1m

  4. BDS – Rob / Tony Damping Rings – (Liverpool) I am working on the Linacs but there’s also a big Manchester / Cockcroft and UK effort towards the other systems.

  5. e- Just the Linacs e+ 5Km

  6. That’s a lot of tunnel and a lot of Niobium… • New 9-cell designs from Cornell (re-entrant) and from KEK (LowLoss / Ichiro) aim to push gradient past 51MV/m. • Would save civil costs on the tunnel and the cavity fabrication. • Certainly help the upgrade to 1TeV c-of-m. • Of course its never that easy… Ichiro design

  7. Higher Order Mode Wakefields • Passage of an electron bunch will excite deflecting modes within the cavities. • A bunch train is 2820 bunches. • Each will leave behind a wakefield which can deflect those following -> loss of luminosity, energy spread, BBU. • These higher order modes must be damped down.

  8. Characterise the modes with a Finite Difference code - GdfidL First results from Ichiro cell. Show 3rd band with largest kick factor. Similar behaviour to TESLA. Full 9-cell simulations are ongoing. # CPU-seconds for eigenvalues : 278216 # Start date : 08/12/2006 # End date : 14/12/2006 # Start time : 18:30:24 # End time : 06:23:33 Dispersion Curve – 7 dipole bands
