  1. PEPFAR/SAG CollaborationStrengthening Information Systems and Streamlining ReportingOzius Dewa, USAID: Strategic Informationodewa@usaid.govPEPFAR South Africa OVC Partners M&E MeetingPretoriaFebruary 20, 2014

  2. Outline • South African Government (SAG) and United States Government (USG) partnership- PEPFAR • Challenges with current information systems • Proposed vision for information systems • Streamlining of reporting requirements • Way forward PEPFAR commitment and continued support of efforts to harmonise data management and reporting systems that foster country ownership and leadership.

  3. SAG/USGPartnership The five-year Partnership Framework (2012-2016) was jointly developed by the United States Government and South African Government and reflects a continuation and strengthening of the strong relationships between the two countries. Partnership Framework- emphasis on mutual accountability, transparency, alignment, etc. Partnership Framework Implementation Plan (PFIP)- roadmap over a five year period (2012/13 – 2016/17) Recently handed over to the DSD the Community-Based Interventions Management System We are in full support of CBIMS and the partners are expected to support its roll-out across the country Our indicators are aligned and the challenges we face today are not new- provides us with a reference point

  4. Current Information System Challenges • Parallel systems • No standardized data dictionaries & exchange standards • More focus on data input than focus on strategic use of data- number of …! • Lack of electronic interface

  5. What is our vision for Information Systems Support?

  6. Streamlining Reporting Requirements PEPFAR actively seeking to support the CBIMS roll-out and aligned MERL system DSD/PEPFAR indicator comparison currently shows minor differences in disaggregations and indicator naming which can be easily aligned Ensuing discussions should be focused on aligning and synchronizing information systems with a focus on strengthening CBOs’ capacity to report to DSD Focus on data exchange between the parallel reporting systems for ease of export and import functionality PEPFAR support to all these systems is the common denominator- making it easy to align the systems

  7. Way Forward Identification of DSD perceived gaps and needs for information systems support Collaborative coordination of PEPFAR partners by DSD and PEPFAR/SA to foster a bottom-up approach in information systems re-alignment Evident support of the CBIMS system at community and other levels by PEPFAR partners Support of the review and implementation of the social services indicators focused on implementation support than diagnosis Continued engagement between PEPFAR/SA and DSD to review information systems and policies implementation progress

  8. Thank You!
