  6. I. Cumulative Sentence A sentence that begins with a subject and a verb and continues with modifiers.

  7. EXAMPLE OF A CUMULATIVE/LOOSE SENTENCE Basic statement: Bells rang. Loose sentence: Bells rang, filling the air with their resonance, startling pigeons, bringing people into the streets to hear the news.

  8. EXAMPLE OF CUMULATIVE/LOOSE SENTENCE Basic statement: The teacher considered him a good student. Loose sentence:The teacher considered him a good student, steady if not inspired, willing if not eager, responsive to instruction and conscientious about his work.

  9. II. Periodic Sentence The main idea goes at the end of the sentence

  10. EXAMPLE OF A PERIODIC SENTENCE Basic statement:The cat scratched Sally. Periodic sentence: Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the loveable cat scratchedSally.

  11. Quick Check: Which one is periodic and cumulative? a. She decided to study English though she was interested in music.b. Although she was interested in music, she finally decided to study English.

  12. Periodic or Loose? A. You cannot make great progress in English without good study habits.B. Without good study habits, you cannot make great progress in English.

  13. Periodic or Loose 1. The river rose dangerously. 2. The river rose above its banks. 3. Swelled by melting snow, the river rose. 4. Uprooted trees swirling away in the current, the river rose. 5. Because the snows had been heavy that winter, the river rose.

  14. Anchor Chart • The purpose of the anchor chart is: • To recall as much as possible that has been learned during class. • To fill in gaps • To “Anchor” learning so that it stays with you. • To prepare for Exit Slips.
