PP1 Status

This status update includes the revised model of the region, addition of beam pipe, and the progress made in making coolant feedthrough prototypes for PP1. The plan is to design a support structure for PST/PP1 and resolve conflicts in the next 1-2 weeks. The major challenge is to introduce flexibility in the connections of the coolant pipes. The goal is to fabricate a real prototype quadrant of PP1 and conduct multi-module tests using early disk sectors.

  1. PP1 Status October 3, 2002

  2. Since the Last Meeting • Revised model of region taking into account layout of services routing from TRT region outward provide by C. Menot(and Marco). • Addition of beam pipe to model(but to be updated with single wall design) • Revised dimensions • Just started making some prototypes of coolant feedthrough “connections”.

  3. Quadrant Side C Service routing to PP2 No cables shown! Not all pipes! Flex transition for power/DCS PP1b Service panels PP1a Endplate to PST flange Bellows for gas seal

  6. What Next? • Design underway(Marco, C. Menot) for support structure that holds up PST/PP1. Expect to be able to fold their model into our model of PP1 in next 1-2 weeks and begin to resolve conflicts. • Dedicated meeting today to go over(at least) • Flex design and transition to round cable. From this should follow layout of prototype for fabrication., • Optical fiber connections? We are assuming MT-to-MT but don’t have drawings! • Update on routing to PP2? • Options to introduce flexible connections • The major unsolved problem is the need to have some flexibility in the connections of the coolant pipes • Just to make connections. Cannot get rigid tubing so exact, we think. Radial compliance from PP1b outwards? • Rigid connection at PP1 will displace pixel detector on cooldown • Attempting to make bellows/sliding connection prototypes that satisfy many constraints(gas seal, torque limiting,….)

  7. More What Next • Our plan is to proceed as rapidly as possible to the fabrication of a real prototype quadrant of PP1. And force design decisions to be made. • This quadrant, partially instrumented, would be used along with real prototype of service panel octant in multi-module tests using early disk sectors with FE-I1 and later FE-I2 modules. • Eventual goal is to operate 2 complete disk sectors with coolant(but not evaporative) and power supplied through PP1 and service panel. • To realized this goal, need PP1 prototype by early 2003.
