  1. September 30th: “XYZ Corp is part of an industry I don’t know a lot about – I need to get smart about it, fast!”

  2. Why might you need to “get smart” about an industry? • Course projects • Interviews • On the job! (yes, this isn’t just an academic exercise)

  3. Industry Research 101 • Suzanne’s page of “Industry and Market Research Resources”: • http://www.library.rochester.edu/subject/business/industry • Broad, multi-industry resources: • Keyword search type: IBISWorld, MarketLine, ThomsonOne • Pre-set list type: NetAdvantage, Factiva, Plunkett

  4. Tips and features - 1 • IBISWorld – easy and fabulous; more granular; US-focus (some “global” reports) • MarketLine – also easy & fabulous; less granular; global coverage. Hot feature: “5 Force Analysis”! • ThomsonOne…fabulous, but not easy*. Professional grade reports from a wide range of analyst companies. *Use lower half of search interface; limit to Report type “industry” – or search by NAICS code/keyword.

  5. Tips and features- 2 • NetAdvantage – “Industry Surveys;”only 52 industries covered, but very good quality. • Factiva – from row of options above search box click “Companies/Market”, then choose “Industry.” • Plunkett – well, it’s simple… has some industries not represented elsewhere, can also be used to create lists of companies in a specific industry.

  6. Industry Research 401 • Topic-focused databases: • Frost & Sullivan: strong in tech, healthcare, pharma, defense – smattering of other areas • Gartner: everything “IT” (computers, information technology) • GBI Research: 5 topics only (pharma; medical devices, energy, clean tech, chemicals) • Sport Business Research Network: the name says it all!

  7. Next week – Simon (and the pros) take a break! Join us Oct. 14, 5:00pm for: “I need to find information about a private company and I can’t find anything- help!” Your problem-solving pros will show you the best resources for making those private companies reveal their secrets!
