The medial collateral ligament present on the sides of the knees connect the femur to tibia and lateral collateral ligament connects the femur to the smaller bone in the lower leg. It is also injured by a noncontact injury such as hyperextension stress. It usually occurs when other ligaments of the knee are also injured, its symptoms include pain, instability of knee while walking, and swelling. For the diagnosis of collateral ligament injury various stress tests are conducted in order to determine the looseness of the ligament. MRI is also required for the diagnosis, serious tears or ruptures of the ligament require surgery for the treatment.
