  2. Information • Textbooks: • TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1, by W. Richard Stevens • Website:http://eeweb.poly.edu/el537/ • Please refer to the website frequently. • Office Hours: Thursdays 2:30-3:30 (LC219).

  3. Important notes • This is a very time-consuming class. • It has an associated lab with six sessions. Each lab requires a detailed lab report. • There will be four homeworks, each requiring a fair amount of time. • I will cover most of the chapters of the textbook. • You will be expected to read the chapters of the textbook and not just rely on my class notes.

  4. Important Notes Contd. • The prerequisite EL536 is a “must.” Please do not attempt to take this class in parallel with EL536. • Exams will be open book (reading chapters will help a lot). • DISCLAIMER: If there is a difference between my lecture notes and the textbook, the textbook is correct. • Labs require basic UNIX knowledge. This should be a prerequisite, but is not to allow you the opportunity to learn UNIX. But please be aware of this need.

  5. Laboratory • The course has a lab section. • Purchase the Lab manual in the bookstore. • There are a total of six labs; about one lab every other week. • There is a hard upper limit of a maximum of 8 students per section. Each student is expected to complete his/her lab as well as his/her lab report individually. • For each lab you need to prepare a lab report. • The lab is in LC 012.

  7. Homeworks • There will be four homeworks • Please work independently for your homeworks • Remember that grading is primarily RELATIVE. This means your grade depends on what percentile of the class is above or below you • The above reasoning applies to lab reports as well

  8. Evaluation Midterm Exam (30%) Final Exam (30%) Lab Reports (20%) Homework Assignments (20%) • Grading is relative • I will post scores for homeworks/labs/exams as we go through the semester using the last four digits of your Poly Institution ID. Please watch this to see where you stand relative to the class so there are no surprises!

  9. Final grade • The total score will be determined for each student based on the above breakdown. • Top 20% of the students will receive A’s, next 30-40% will receive B’s, remaining will receive C’s or F’s. • For borderline cases (i.e. students close to the A-B border or B-C border): • If an individual student receives a score in the top 20% of the class in the finals, then he/she can be considered for an A. • A similar rule will be applied for the B-C border.
