  2. THE WHEELBARROW AND COMPASS • The wheelbarrow was invented between 30B.C. - 23A.D. • The Chinese called it the wooden ox. • Chinese discovered magnetism and invented the compass, which was invented in 500B.C.

  3. JADE Jade was a valuable green stone. It was invented around 3,000 B.C. It still is used today.

  4. PORCELAIN AND THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA • Porcelain was baked at 1200 degrees! It was invented by Tao-Yue in 600 A.D. • The Great Wall of China was invented in 221B.C. to keep invaders out. • It has over 15,000 defense towers!

  5. PAPER MONEY AND CLOCKS • Paper money was invented in the 9th century A.D. • It was called flying money because it could blow away easily.

  6. CLOCKS • Clocks rang every 15 minutes. • Clock makers still use the same design as the Chinese people did. • They were invented between 200-1300 A.D.

  7. WRITING AND GUNPOWDER • 1000 B.C. the first book was invented. • The first letters were called picture graphs. • Writing was invented so early in their history they preserved a record for their history and learning. • Around 200 A.D. gunpowder was invented. • You mixed sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter together.

  8. COAL AND IRONING • Iron was smelted around 4th century B.C. • Steel was perfected by the 400’s A.D. • With the development of annealing, ploughshares, longer swords, and even buildings were eventually made of iron.

  9. SILK • The history of silk began in the 27th century B.C. • Chinese kept the secret of silk to themselves for many years. • They wanted to make money because of the silk.

  10. ABACUS • In 100 A.D. the abacus was invented. • By the 1300’s it was perfected. • You could add, subtract, multiply, and divide was this inventions. • It is still widely used over the world.
