How and When • Introduced in ISTC 653 or ISTC 615 • Design skills presented in ISTC 541 (web design, wiki’s, Google Sites, PowerPoint etc.) • Candidates select the software for the design • Reflective writing based on the standards will occur in most courses. • Full portfolio completed near the end of the program in conjunction with the ISTC 789.

  3. Components • 20 reflections (1 per AASL standard) – focus on course assessments/artifacts and practical experiences • 1 summative reflection • 1 conceptual map and a reflection

Which Standards • Remember that AASL has two sets of standards: • Standards for your preparation – The AASL Standards for the Preparation of School Library Media Specialists – These are the standards used in the portfolio • Standards for your Students- Standards for the 21st Century Learners – these will be embedded in assignments you design for your students, but these are not the standards you reflect on in the portfolio process.

  5. Signature/Key Assessment • The school library media program has eight signature assessments. The eight assessments represent all the competencies present in the 20 AASL standards for the Preparation of School Library Media Specialists.

  6. Other Assessments • The signature assessments are a starting point for writing the reflections. All assessments and artifacts from your coursework may be incorporated into the reflections. • Your prek-12 application on coursework should also be used in the reflective writing process – this is perhaps most important – to see how you are applying the knowledge and skills acquired in school library media classes with prek-12 students.

  10. Brainstorm • What are some potential assessments and experiences from the ISTC 653 course that could be used in the completion of your portfolio?

  11. Portfolio Essentials • The portfolio is introduced in ISTC 653 (The Organization of Knowledge) and structurally designed in ISTC 541 (Foundations of Instructional Technology).

  12. As candidates near completion of the program, they will write reflection statements correlating their program work, particularly as the work connects to Pk-12 students. 

  13. It is not likely possible to complete the portfolio until a majority of coursework is completed.  The portfolio is to be completed as part of (three credits) of the final six credit program course, ISTC 789 (Practicum and Portfolio in School Library Media). 

  14. Candidates should archive all copies of their work.
