  1. Do Now • In order, list the Terrestrial & Jovian planets of our solar system. What are the major differences between these two categories of planets? • 2. During which months do you think the following pictures were taken? • (A) (B) • 3. If an object is closer to the sun, will it have a higher or lower temperature?

  2. OBJECTIVE SWBAT evaluate how planetary motion leads to season changes.

  3. AGENDA Do Now Seasons of the Year Video & Guided Qs Guided Practice Worksheet The Seasons Foldable Postcard Exit Ticket

  4. QUOTE OF THE DAY      “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” ~Maria Robinson

  5. VIDEO1. What are the four seasons?2. What 2 factors cause the seasons to occur?3. Does the tilt of the Earth change as it rotates around the sun?4. At the same time of year what seasons will the northern and southern hemispheres experience?http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=701675E3-565C-423E-AE7D-20E4AF5D17C7&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=DSCE

  6. DAY warmer NIGHT cooler • The Earth rotates on its axis • 1 full rotation = one day • Looking at the picture below, why is the left hemisphere experiencing a warm day and the right hemisphere experiencing a cooler night? Comparing Rotations: Earth=24 hrs Mercury=59 days Pluto=6 days

  7. The Earth orbits (revolves around) the sun How long is one full revolution? 365 days = 1 year Comparing Revolutions: Earth=365.25 days Mercury=88 days Oluto=248 years

  8. The planet…What do we know? • All the planets in our solar system revolve around the sun. • But how? • Kepler discovered elliptical planetary orbits A B C

  9. So this is what the Earth looks like right? axis

  10. And it revolves around the sun like this right? This shows orbit

  11. This shows orbit WRONG!

  12. Earth’s axis is not straight • Earth’s axis is tilted 23.5°from vertical 23.5° tilt

  13. The Earth’s orbit actually looks like this This shows orbit

  14. Like What? http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/terc/content/visualizations/es0408/es0408page01.cfm?chapter_no=visualization

  15. Why does that matter? The Earth’s tilted axis allows us to have seasons • 4 seasons based on Earth’s position to the sun Spring Summer Fall Winter

  16. Winter • When the Earth is tilted away from the sun. • Coldest temperatures Top tilted away from sun= winter

  17. Spring • Moderate (medium) temperatures • Starts cold and gets warmer as that part of Earth is tilted toward the sun Beginning to be tilted toward the sun= spring

  18. Summer • When the Earth is tilted toward the sun. • Warmest temperatures Top titled toward the sun= summer

  19. Autumn (fall) • Moderate (medium) temperatures • Starts warm and gets cooler as that part of Earth is tilted away from the sun Beginning to be tilted away from the sun= spring

  20. The equator divides the earth into top and bottom halves (Northern and Southern hemisphere) • Because of the tilt of the earth, the hemispheres have opposite seasons. WHY?

  21. FOLDABLE FRONT INSIDE SUMMER AUTUMN SPRING WINTER DRAWING DRAWING DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION BACK Draw a picture to show the Earth orbiting around the sun. Draw the Earth in the 4 main positions. Use arrows to show the direction the Earth is moving. On your arrows, describe what the temperature is doing. Label the four seasons. DRAWING DRAWING DRAWING DRAWING DESCRIPTION

  22. POSTCARD • Pick a place on the map you will travel to over the summer. • Write a postcard telling your friend what season it is there. Explain why it is that season. Describe what the temperature is like. • For the picture on your postcard (on the back), draw what the Earth and sun would look like for this season. 1 4 Alaska South Africa Brazil England 3 2

  23. EXIT TICKET • When the northern hemisphere is experiencing fall, which season is the southern hemisphere experiencing? • Summer b. Fall c. Winter d. Spring • The rotation of the earth on its axis is responsible for what time frame? • An hour b. a day c. a season d. a year • Who was credited with discovering the elliptical planetary orbit? a. Galileo b. Einstein c. Kepler d. Wegner • What is the measure of the tilt of Earth’s axis? a. 5o b. 23.5o c. 75.3o d. 90.5o 5. What does Earth’s revolution refer to? • Movement around its axis b. Movement around sun c. It’s formation of day d. Rotation around other planets
