  2. Location: Abilene, TX • Abilene is about 401 miles (6 hours) from Humble/Kingwood • Abilene is the location of two other universities: McMurry & Abilene Christian University.

  3. Colors Purple and Gold

  4. History • Abilene Baptist College began in 1891. • The school didn’t have enough money to finish building, but was saved when a New York preacher, Dr. James B. Simmons, donated the money they needed. • They became a university in 1925 and changed their name to Simmons University. • In the Depression, they nearly closed due to lack of money, but were again saved when Mary and John G. Hardin of Burkburnet, TX donated money to help them stay open. • In 1934, they changed their name to Hardin-Simmons University.

  5. Academics HSU offers courses in geography, Greek, Hebrew, humanities, and physical sciences, as well. The university offers a doctorate in physical therapy, the first in Texas which is open to private citizens, as well as Doctor of Education, Doctor of Ministry and a Doctor of Science degrees. 

  6. Ministry • Hardin-Simmons is a private Baptist University. • Church services are held weekly for the entire student body. • Students get involved in Bible Study groups and go on mission trips, in addition to hosting concerts and other campus events.

  7. Mascot: Cowboys and Cowgirls

  8. Six White Horses These world famous western-style riders on White Horses, carry the six flags that have flown over Texas. They have performed for millions in parades, rodeos and at many other public functions.

  11. HSU offers 18 varsity sports, including teams in basketball, golf, tennis, cross country, track, and soccer for men and women, as well as programs in football and baseball for men and volleyball and softball for women.
