  3. Whitetail deer are the smallest deer in North American. • The yellow on the map shows where whitetail deer live.

  4. The coats on the deer in summer are reddish brown. • In the winter the coats fade to dull gray brown.

  5. Male deer are called bucks. • The male deer have antlers. • The male deer use their antlers to fight each other.

  6. The adult girl deer are called doe. • She has baby deer called fawns. • Fawns have white spots to help them blend into forest.

  7. Instinctive Behaviors • Deer instinctively know to stay away from predators. • Bucks rub their antlers on trees removing the bark to mark their territory.

  8. Other interesting facts Deer eat plants, twigs, fruit, corn and nuts Deer can run up to 40 miles an hour, jump 9 foot fences, and swim 13 miles per hour. Deer like to stay around forests and farms because they sleep and eat there.
