UK Rail energy use Solution: • Hybrid trains with onboard energy storage device • Fuel consumption and emissions reduced through recovery of braking energy 60% electric trains Flywheel Energy Storage High speed composite flywheels have high specific energy and power Vacuum containment designed to minimise losses and maximise safety Mechanical transmissions have been identified as a potentially efficient, robust and low-cost way of transferring power between the vehicle and flywheel. Novel transmission systems utilising epicyclic gearing are being developed through computational modelling and small scale experimental testing. System Operation Results • Simulation includes; • Detailed component based vehicle model • Realistic route and timetable data Computational model of the proposed flywheel hybrid systems predicts fuel savings of up to 30% for regional rail vehicles
