  4. Life in a State of Nature • All are entitled to natural rights • Life • Liberty • Property • No need for government

  5. Applications to the Real World • “Social Contract” • People give up some of their natural rights • Form a government to protect rights • “Consent of the Governed” • Sovereignty of the People • People can change the government if it does not protect natural rights
