  1. Paper 2 Common Mistakes

  2. Using Contractions Contractions (couldn’t, didn’t, weren’t, shouldn’t, isn’t, etc) are informal language and inappropriate register for an essay. Example: Both Okonkwo and Willy lived only for their “ambitions” and couldn’t realize that ambition is not everything. Proper: Both Okonkwo and Willy lived only for their “ambitions” and could not realize that ambition is not everything. Or and were unable to realize that ambition is not everything.

  3. Ending a paragraph with a quotation from the novel/play/story. Example: “He said he could hear the bastards homing in on him….it was driving him crazy.” Need to explain what the quote proves in relation to the question you are answering.

  4. Not underlining titles Example: “The Things They Carried” NOT CORRECT The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien 

  5. Summary instead of analysis Yes, you do need a bit of a summary to have your point put in to context BUT Many of you are doing mostly summary and not really explaining quotes /examples and how they support your ideas of ‘things are not always as they seem’ or ‘human beings are inevitable ambitious’.

  6. Not connecting to a theme You should connect each question to a theme (even if it does not ask for it) Example: How important is the ending of a work of literature? This question does not ask for a theme, however it is clear that an ending is important to fully illuminate a theme in the work and that is what you are to prove.

  7. Not explaining your theme How do death or deaths develop the most important themes in literature? Question. YOU must make it clear what theme or themes you will prove in regards to death or deaths in the literature you chose. For example: What theme does Okonkwo or Ikemefuna’s death(s) illuminate or reinforce? What about Willy Loman’s death? Kiowa or Curt Lemon or Ted Lavender’s deaths, Tessie Hutchinson, Winston (even if metaphorically).

  8. Ending sentences to body paragraphs Many of you are saying examples but NOT connecting it to the question. To ensure you are connecting back to the question makes sure your final sentences in EVERY body paragraph explains what is shown in regards to the question. Example: In 1984 it ends with the sentence, “He had one the victory over himself. He loved big brother.” This dreadful transformation of Winston makes us, the reader, evaluate ourselves and the society we are living in now; the ending makes us reflect on how our society may not be all that different from Winston’s world of manipulation….

  9. Not finishing a Conclusion THERE MUST be a complete conclusion. In 1 and ½ hours for SL and 2 hours for HL there is NO reason for an incomplete or no conclusion. In the last 10 minutes of the exam – conclusion – follow 3 points – 1. Restate the question. 2. state what you proved in regards to each text and the question. 3. why it is important to society? Example: It is true that “human beings are inevitable ambitious.” Willy Loman’s ambition to achieve the American Dream destroys his family and ultimately destroys his own life by trying to achieve something that was not right for him. Okonkwo’s ambition drove him to suicide because he knew his dreams/ambitions would not be achievable with the changing of his tribal ways. Human beings greatest downfall/weakness is their inability to accept defeat. Ambition is what drives people to find cures for diseases, to challenge themselves to do better, but it is also what makes people destroy themselves when they are unable to see the reality of their situation.

  10. Conclusion Death or deaths are important for developing themes in literature. Okonkwo’s death illuminates the struggle of change especially with colonization. Tess Hutchinson’s death shows us how barbaric it is when people hold on to traditions they no longer understand. Deaths are what make people feel loss and it initiates change and helps us understand the importance of the choices we make in life.

  11. Separating important information in body paragraphs. Many of you are writing a point about your text but then you wait until another paragraph to discuss how and what it proves in relation to your chosen question.
