  10. Religious and political context

  11. Syrian Oppression • II Kings 8:11-12 • “And he settled his countenance stedfastly, until he was ashamed: and the man of God wept. And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child.”

  12. Syrian Oppression • II Kings 10:32-33 • “In those days the LORD began to cut Israel short: and Hazael smote them in all the coasts of Israel; from Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan.”

  13. “the LORD began to cut Israel short” • Amos 1:3 – 2:2 • “because {the Syrians} have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:” • “because {the Philistines} carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom” • “because {Tyre} delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant”

  17. “the LORD gave Israel a saviour” • “In the days of Uzziah king of Judah” • Uzziah and Azariah are one and the same individual – a relatively good king of Judah – but took it upon himself to be priest • History recorded in II Kng 14:21-22; II Kng 15:1-7; II Chr. 26; Isa. 1:1 & 6:1; Zec. 14:5 • II Chr. 26 particularly details the strength of his armies and how he extended the kingdom of Judah

  18. “the LORD gave Israel a saviour” • “And in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash” • History recorded in II Kng. 14:23-29 – (parenthetical to the reign of Uzziah – demonstrates parallels in Judah and Israel) • Expanded borders like not since the days of Solomon • Created a wealthy class – Hosea spoke at same time to Israel in the north.

  22. Judgment against the Haters of Israel • Gaza • Carried away the whole captivity delivering them to Edom • Participate in the captivity of Jerusalem – Zech. 14:2 • Tyrus • Shut up the captivity to Edom and remember not from whence they came – allied with Israel

  23. Judgment against the Haters of Israel • Edom • Insatiable Anti-Semitism – “pursued his brother with the sword” “did cast off all pity” • Attitude displayed with Gog and in Europe • Ammon • Violence and cruelty in the pursuit of self interest – “casualties of war” • Moab • “Burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime” • Context: II Kings 3 – same motivation
