  1. Attracting Green Ships May 2012

  2. Agenda • About RightShip • The Current Environment • The Existing Vessel Design Index • Accuracy of data • Factoring in relative CO2 performance in today’s decision making process • Practical application examples

  3. About Rightship • Independent company formed in Oct 2001 • Melbourne, London & Houston • 200+ Customers globally • Ship Vetting & Risk Management • Petroleum & Dry Cargo Vetting Service • Environmental Rating & CO2 Benchmarking • Worldwide dedicated vetting specialists • Former serving Masters and ChiefEngineers • Award winning proven system • ISO9001 and ISO27001 Certified

  4. Part Two The Current Environment

  5. Commitment to Sustainability Environmentally Friendly Initiatives • Greenaward –Benefits • Singapore Green Ship Program -Incentives • Environmental Ship Index (ESI) –Promote

  6. Current Incentives Available Include • Reduction in port fees • Reduced rates on waste reception facilities • Reduced marine services charges • Reduced fees for training courses, seminars and events • Reduced charges for marine products • Preferential queue treatment

  7. Environmentally Friendly Ports

  8. Part Three The Existing Vessel Design Index

  9. Framing the Opportunity

  10. EEDI – What is it? • Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) • A formula produced by the IMO to calculate the amount of CO2 emitted (in grams) by a vessel for every tonne of cargo carried a nautical mile based on: • Total engine power • Fuel type & specific fuel consumption • Cargo carrying capacity • Speed • Agreed at MEPC 62 in July 2011 and comes in to force for new deliveries from January 2013

  11. EVDI™ – What is it? • Existing Vessel Design Index (EVDI™) • This formula produces the amount of CO2 emitted (in grams) by a vessel for every tonne of cargo carried a nautical mile based on: • Total engine power • Fuel type & specific fuel consumption • Cargo carrying capacity • Speed • Developed by RightShip based on the same assumption as the EEDI, this formula can be validly applied to existing vessels right now

  12. EVDI™ – What it is not? • Not a replacement for the EEDI • Not a mechanism to drive retrospective legislation • Not a measure of the vessel’s operational performance • Not going to tell you if a vessel has been designed efficiently

  13. The Relative Efficiency of the Existing Fleet

  14. Basis of Comparison

  15. Let’s Compare

  16. Let’s Compare

  17. Part Four How accurate is the data?

  18. First Best Source of Data

  19. Part Four Consider the Implications

  20. Bulk Carriers: Brazil to China 11,023 nautical miles

  21. CO2 Differential Bulk Carriers Calculated using 170,000 to 175,000 dwt Vessels

  22. Price of Fuel Differential Bulk Carriers Assumes a price of fuel USD650 per tonne (IFO 380)

  23. Part Five Practical Applications

  24. For the Terminal

  25. For the Ship Owner

  26. Results so far • Charterers • Owners • Terminals • Finance companies • Industry

  27. Part Six Conclusions

  28. Conclusions • Emissions of the existing fleet already form part of the decision making process • RightShip A - G Greenhouse Gas Emissions is a statistically valid means of determining relative efficiency of existing tonnage • Promote market based solutions through the logistics chain • Welcome your feedback and input – www.shippingefficiency.org
