The ISTEP+ assessment measures individual student achievement against Indiana's Academic Standards, aiming to ensure that every student reaches their fullest potential every day. This criterion-referenced test evaluates not just individual performance but also classroom, school, and corporate attainment relative to state performance levels. It’s crucial to interpret data effectively, acknowledging limitations while identifying student needs. By analyzing data trends and implementing targeted remediation and instructional practices, we can significantly enhance educational outcomes for our students.

ISTEP+ Trends 2005-2013 Porter Township School Corporation
IDOE Statement of Purpose • Measures individual student achievement in mastering the Indiana Academic Standards • Measures to what extent the students as a group—in your classroom, school, and corporation—are attaining mastery of the Academic Standards. • Measures where the students in your classroom, school, or corporation stand relative to the three performance levels established by the Indiana State Board of Education. (taken directly from http://www.doe.in.gov/sites/default/files/assessment/2012-gti.pdf)
What is the ISTEP+ Test? • A criterion referenced test (assesses based on a standard as opposed to norm referenced that compares one child to the rest of the students in a state or nation) • Compares a student’s performance to the established cut score to determine pass, did not pass, or pass+ (taken from http://www.doe.in.gov/sites/default/files/assessment/2012-gti.pdf)
When looking at data… • It’s important to remember: • These are numbers • It doesn’t answer the question of “why” • It is noisy—meaning there are often outside factors impacting the data set • This is just the first step to developing a plan for meeting the needs of each student
Where do we go next? • Provide remediation to students who did not pass • Progress monitor students • Drill down into data to look for specific trends with specific standards • Evaluate what other data sources tell us • Evaluate instructional practices
