  1. What Are The Benefits Of A Grahshanti Puja? When a person is born, a birth or a natal chart is drawn up, in accordance with a several ancient traditions. While not all cultures follow this, several cultures with an Indian lineage and heritage stick by this practice till date. It is widely believed that the nine planets, or grahas as they are referred to in Sanskrit, rule a person’s life and influence almost every aspect in one’s life – be it career, domestic life or even finances. The alignment of the nine planets is what is said to sway a person’s life happenings and events – where well-aligned planets exert a positive influence while misaligned plants exert a negative influence. Each of the planets are said govern different aspects of one’s life, and when a planet is in retrograde, it may affect a person’s life in a negative manner, affecting their career, finances, relationships and health, among other things. The grahshanti puja is performed for this specific reason, in order to remove or dispel the negative force the planetary position may have one’s life aspects so they can ensure a life free of hurdles and hardships. While the benefits of a grahshanti puja are believed to be multifold, the primary benefit that it supposedly has is to remove all the negative vibrations caused by the planets in retrograde, while also bolster the vibrations presented by planets that are in a positive position in one’s natal chart. All of this is believed to help one proser in life and maintain good health and acquire wealth. It is ideally performed before a person or a family moves into a new house, whether rented or owned, in order to remove negative energies in the family before they move into a new space and can alo be performed as an online puja. The puja is also recommended to be performed by prospective brides and grooms before the wedding in their respective homes to get rid of any doshas before they step into beginning a new life and setting up a new home together. The puja is typically performed by learned priests, who perform various rituals over the course of the puja. The puja begins with the invocation of Lord Ganesha, who is believed to be a remover of all obstacles – or Vignaharta as he is referred to in many ancient texts. Over the course of the puja, the priests will chant mantras or shlokas invoking the nine planets - Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Brihaspati, Shukra, Rahu, Ketu, and Shani. The jaap can be done in two ways – 51,000 times by 3 pandits or 1.25 lakh times by 5 pandits. Much like every other Hindu puja, during this time, the devotees are expected to abstain from eating non-vegetarian food, or consuming alcohol.

  2. With the pandemic continuing to loom on us, several rituals have taken an online avatar, such as the laghu rudra puja.
