  3. Climate • Mediterranean atmosphere • Subtropical climate (hot, dry summers & cool wet winters) • Rome: high quality wine => exported to other region • Carthage (Northern Africa): exported olive oil (olive: popular in Mediterranean region) • Egypt: Dry Desert => wheat & barley

  4. Who traded – which ethnic groups of people? • Jewish Diaspora using the trade routes (continued for 2000 yrs) • Rome & Greece ↔China, India • Egyptians

What goods were traded? • Rome : Wine • Cyprus : Copper, murex (purple dye) • Carthage : Olive Oil • Iberian peninsula : Garum (fish sauce) • Sicily, Egypt, Northern Africa: Grain (to Rome) • Africa :animal skins, exotic animals, precious metals, exotic animals • Asia :spice, art • Ancient Greece :Olive, fig trees, seafood, grapes
