Enhancing Maritime Security: Norway-Japan Cooperation for Securing Sea Lanes
This project explores the potential collaboration between Norway and Japan in combating piracy incidents at sea. In 2009, there was a significant increase in piracy incidents globally, particularly in areas like the Gulf of Aden and off Somalia. The presence of navies and international cooperation through initiatives like the Maritime Security Centre, Horn of Africa (MSCHOA) played a crucial role in reducing successful hijacking rates. The Joint Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) from Japan made substantial contributions with surface escort and air patrol missions. The project proposes information sharing, joint studies on anti-piracy operations, and a focus on sea lanes defense in the Arctic Ocean as key areas for cooperation between Norway and Japan. Establishing the "Norway-Japan Maritime Security Dialogue" is recommended to materialize this partnership.
