Understanding Muscular Dystrophy: Causes, Types, and Impact

Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a group of inherited disorders characterized by muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue that progressively worsens over time. Caused by genetic mutations affecting protein production, MD impacts movement, posture, and breathing. Currently, there is no cure, but early diagnosis through genetic screening can aid in management. The four most common types of MD include Duchenne, facioscapulohumeral, limb-girdle, and myotonic dystrophies. Learning about MD can help in understanding its effects and the importance of support systems for those affected.

  2. muscuLAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION BETTER KNOWN AS (MDA) • Is a group of inherited disorders that involve muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue, which get worse over time. • caused by incorrect or missing genetic information that prevents the body from making the proteins needed to build and maintain healthy muscles.

  3. HOW AND WHEN • Is diagnosed through a physical exam, a family medical history, and tests.

  4. Four types of muscular dystrophy • Doctors have not yet found a cure for any of the muscular dystrophies. The four most common muscular dystrophies are: • Duchenne, • facioscapulohumeral, • limb-girdle, • myotonic.

  5. What causes muscular dystrophy • Muscular dystrophy is a general term for a group of inherited diseases involving a defective gene. Each form of muscular dystrophy is caused by a genetic mutation that's particular to that type of the disease.

  6. Effects: • Movement • Posture • Breathing • Weakens Skeletal Muscle's

  7. Can the birth defect be prevented? • It cannot be prevented. If you have a family history of muscular dystrophy, genetic screening may be helpful for an early diagnosis and early treatment
