  2. Mountains • Rocky Mountains • Largest mountain system in N. America • Extends more than 3,000 miles • 350 miles wide • Highest Peak: 14,000 feet above sea level

Yellowstone National Park • Oldest national park in the world • Established in 1872 • Covers more than 2.2 million acres of land • Points of Interest • Geysers • Hot spring that shoots out hot water in the air • More than 10,000 hot springs and geysers • Old Faithful • Most famous geyser • Erupts every 45-110minutes

  4. Geysers • Old Faithful sends a stream of boiling water hundreds of feet into the air. • There are so many hot springs because it is located over a “hot spot” where magma lies close to the Earth’s surface. Magma heats underground water that rises to the surface.

Frigid Climates • The Frosty North • Tundra • Located in Alaska, a cold flat area where no trees can grow • Location of the Iditarod • Average Temps. • Northern part: -11 degrees • Lowest temp recorded: In Prospect Creek -80 below zero • Southern Part • Average the whole year with temps. Ranging between 28-55°

  6. Tropical Climates • Warm and tropical climates • Temperatures rarely drop below freezing, even in the dead of winter • Hawaii • Tropical climate • Warm and wet all year round • Tropical rainforests

  7. Death Valley • Southern California • Lowest point in North America • desert climate • Very few trees • Shrubs need very little water to survive.

  8. Let it Rain and Snow • Precipitation Varies • Death valley went two years with NO form of precipitation • Record Snow • Rainier Paradise Ranger Station, Washington • 1,122 inches of snow • Silver Lake, Colorado • In 24 hours 76 inches of snow fell

Precipitation • Rainiest place ever!!!! • Mount Waialeale, Hawaii • Average rainfall: 460 inches or more • Cascade Range, Washington • West of the range: Olympic Peninsula- 135 in. • East of the range: Yakima- less than 8 in. • Cascade Rain Shadow • The reason for the difference. • Eastern side of the shadow receives less rain than the west

  10. Natural Resources • Alaska • Harsh climates cannot support plant growth • Greenhouses- necessary for Alaska to grow crops • Hawaii • Tropical climate is great for growing crops • Sugarcane and Pineapples • Macadamia nuts and coffee
