  3. Grammar • Main Verb • Most important word that tells what the subject is doing. • Helping Verb • Comes before the main verb • Example • LaVonne is climbing the wall. • She has passed the halfway point. • She will pull herself to the top.

  4. Grammar • Linking Verbs • Joins the subject to a word in the predicate that names or describes the subject. • Does not show action. • Predicate Noun • Follows a linking verb and names the subject • Predicate Adjective • Follows a linking verb and describes the subject

  5. Find the linking verbs, subject and adjective • Doug is a strong hiker. • He was very brave today. • Doug is a strong hiker. • He was very brave today.

  6. Homophones • Words that sound alike but have different meanings. • Ate ________ • Be ________ • Ant _______ • He gave a groan when he looked down the canyon. After he got past the ledge, Doug felt as if he had grown a foot taller.

  7. Comprehension Skills • Reread page 192. What clues in this paragraph suggest that Charlie will stay with Doug, and help him find his brother? • On page 192 Charlie turns around and makes sure Doug is following him, this indicates that Charlie is helping Doug and may lead him to Gordon. • Do you think Doug would have searched for his brother if Gordon was in their house? • I do not believe Doug would have searched for Gordon if he was inside their home. Doug would have known Gordon was safe and would not have felt the impulse to go out and look for him.
