  2. Introduction Home What do you know about American Indians? Do you ever wonder what a typical day in the life of an American Indian was like four hundred years ago? For this webquest, you will become a historian that travels back in time to find out about one of three American Indian tribes: Lakota, Powhatan, or Pueblo.

  3. Task Home Work in assigned pairs to become historians for one of three tribes: Lakota, Powhatan, or Pueblo. As historians, it is your job to find out as much as you can about the tribe: where they lived, what they ate, what their homes were like, what jobs they had, how they traveled, and what they made. You will put together a book with your partner that describes what you found and tells what an typical day was like as an American Indian in the 1700’s. Once your book is assembled, you will present your findings to the class!

  4. Process (Part 1) Home • Using the paper provided to you, work with your partner to answer each question on the next slide. Uses the links on the resources slide to learn about your tribe. • Each answer should be on a different piece of paper. Your team must write at least two complete sentences for each question. • You will assemble the pages into a book. I have sample books for you to look at. The last page must be a paragraph about a day in the life of an American Indian from your tribe. Pretend you are a member of that tribe. Talk about where you live and what you do from the beginning of the day to the end. Give as many details as possible. The paragraph must be at least five sentences. • Please use drawings or images cut out of handouts I have provided to illustrate your findings. • Your book must have a cover page with the name of your tribe and an illustration. • Lastly, you will present your finished book of findings to the class!

  5. Process (Part 2) Home Work in assigned pairs to become historians for one of three tribes: Lakota, Powhatan, or Pueblo. As historians, it is your job to find out the: • Region – what area did they live in? • Geography – are there mountains, plains, forests, lakes? • Climate – what is the weather like in that region? • Plant and animal life – what types of plants and animals were there? • Food – what did the tribe eat? • Homes – what type of house did they live in? What was it made of? • Jobs – what did the men and women do? • Arts and crafts – what did they make? • Interesting facts – what is most interesting to you about this tribe? • Past and present –Are their lives different today than they were hundreds of years ago? How?

Teacher’s Guide Home • Second grade History SOL 2.2: • The student will compare the lives and contributions of three American Indian cultures of the past and present,with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakotaof the Plains, and the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest. • Lead-in activities: what do you know about American Indians? Where did you learn about them (TV, movies, family, etc.)? • Time allotted for webquest: one hour a day for one week. Presentations on a separate day. • Follow up questions: did this change what you thought you knew about American Indians?
