  1. Servant Leadership How do you lead?

  2. Servant Leaders You Know Jesus Christ Martin Luther King Jr. Nelson Mandela Mother Teresa Gandhi

  3. What is a Servant Leader? Servant-leaders achieve results for their organizations by giving priority attention to the needs of their colleagues and those they serve.

  4. Servant-leaders are often seen as humble stewards of their organization's resources (human, financial and physical).

  5. Servant leadership is one of the most popular leadership models around today. The concept was developed by Robert K. Greenleaf in 1970.

  6. The servant leader serves the people he/she leads which implies that employees are an end in themselves rather than a means to an organizational purpose or bottom line.

  7. What Do Servant Leaders Do? • Devote themselves to serving the needs of organization members. • Focus on meeting the needs of those they lead. • Develop employees to bring out the best in them. • Coach others and encourage their self expression. • Facilitate personal growth in all who work with them. • Listen and build a sense of community.

  8. Examples of Servant Leaders

  9. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is an example of a servant leader. His life shows the extraordinary power of servant leadership to radically transform a nation. He was an extraordinary and unmatched leader. He left us a legacy of courage and a philosophy of leadership that we can all work hard to emulate. "Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.“ -- Martin Luther King, Jr.

  10. Mother Teresa She embodies what it means to be a servant leader. Her life is a testimony of faith and her actions showed Christ’s love to those who needed it most. A hero is someone who does not seek fame or fortune, but rather lives a life of integrity and impacts people along the way. Mother Teresa is the epitome of generosity and selflessness, encouraging me to look more closely at the needs of those around me and to reach out to them in love. I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world. -- Mother Teresa

  11. Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela is a true servant leader. He believes that courage is not the absence of fear — it's inspiring others to move beyond it - pretend and, through the act of appearing fearless, inspire others. He knew that he was a model for others, and that gave him the strength to triumph over his own fear. Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front - Mandela would simply listen. The trick of leadership is allowing yourself to be led too. "It is wise," he said, "to persuade people to do things and make them think it was their own idea." “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” --Nelson Mandela

  12. Gandhi Few men have ever had as much of an effect on our world as Gandhi (1869-1948), though he used the message of peace and love, rather than war and destruction. One time a prominent lawyer in South Africa, Gandhi gave up practicing law and returned to India in order to help ease the suffering of the repressed people of his homeland. Gandhi's love for people and his religious fervor made him a revolutionary in many of his ideas and actions. Be the change that you want to see in the world. -- Gandhi

  13. Jesus Christ Jesus is our servant/leader. In His ministry on earth he beautifully fused together servant-hood and leadership. He was essentially a leader, undoubtedly a servant. In his personality, Jesus displayed both characteristics. He was a servant, He was a leader. And with Jesus as our example, we are called to be servant leaders. “For God so loved the World that he gave his only begotten Son.” -- John 3:16

  14. True Servant Leadership "And when the feelings of service for your fellow men arise within your soul, do not stifle them; when the emotions of love for your neighbor well up within your heart, give expression to such urges of affection in intelligent ministry to the real needs of your fellows.” -- Jesus Christ

  15. A scene from Invictus

  16. Who are your leadership mentors? What changes do you need to make to your leadership style to be more of a Servant Leader? Nelson Mandela? Jesus Christ? Mother Teresa? Martin Luther King Jr.? Gandhi?
