  3. Shmuel wears dirty striped pyjamas like a uniform so he is recognisable to the soldiers. • He doesn’t wear shoes so his feet are dirty and grazed. • When Shmuel was younger his dad gave him a watch with a golden face. Shmuel description

  4. One day Shmuel was given an armband by his mum, it had a star on it. • From then on he was only allowed to go to shops that had a star in its window. • A few days later his family was moved to a special place by soldiers. • Shmuel and his family had to share one room with another family, eleven people in total shared the room. When it all changed

  5. In the small room Shmuel faced constant arguing and beatings from a boy older than him. • When being moved to Auschwitz Shmuel was put on a train with no doors or windows and hardly any air to breath. • Once he got to Auschwitz the watch Shmuel’sfather had given him was taken by a soldier. • Shmuel and his father got separated from his mother. Harsh times

  6. When Shmuel first met Bruno, was when Bruno was out exploring. • Bruno told Shmuel that he hadn’t found anything apart from him. • Shmuel was glad that he met Bruno, Bruno felt the same and at one point he even thought Shmuel and himself were like twins. “The dot that became a speck that became a blob that became a figure that became a boy.”

  7. There are many Shmuels in Auschwitz but only one shares the same birthday as Bruno. • Even though they have many differences Bruno and Shmuel are very good friends. • Shmuel follows the “Star” and Bruno the “Swastika” but as John Boyne says “Lines may divide us, but hope will unite us.” Shmuel and Bruno

  8. The fence dividing Bruno and Shmuel is tall with sharp spikes with razor sharp teeth. “Lines may divide us”

  9. Shmuel is scared by Lieutenant Kotler, Shmuel says he smells funny and that he is a bully. • When talking to Bruno about this the conversation sent a shiver down Shmuels spine. • Shmuel got a black eye during his time at Out-With. Fears
