Vertebrate Diversity Project Biology 10
The Project • Focus in on one group (order) of vertebrates • Research one major characteristic of the group in general • Choose one focus animal to highlight • Presentations in class, each person presenting their own section
Major Characteristics: • Major characteristics : • Respiratory system • Excretory system • Cardiovascular system (including the structure of the heart) • Nervous system / Senses • Reproductive system / how it reproduces • Digestive system / how and what it eats • plus... sources of information for each slide • You need to compare your characteristic with how that system works in humans!
Focus Animal • Role in the ecosystem • Specific behaviors or adaptations • Habitat and where in the world it is found • Unusual or cool characteristics • Reproductive and digestive system information (mammals only) • Sources of information
An Example of a focus animal... Remember: Maximum 3 slides 3 minutes maximum (start streaming videos in another window before you begin so they are ready when you need them)
The Weddell SealA Marine Mammal • 400 to 500 kg, up to 3m long • Swim with back flippers • Thick blubber • Live on ice / waters around Antarctica • Incredibly deep divers • Up to 700m deep! • Hold their breath for up to 45 min • possibly 80min max
Placental mammals • Mate underwater • Placenta inside the uterus nourishes the fetus • Live single pups born on the ice • Feed their pups milk for 6 weeks • Short digestive tract (carnivore) • Feed on fish and squid (bottom) • Find food in darkness (whiskers) • Reports of 40kg fish being caught! • Eaten by killer whales or leopard seals underwater • Vocalize beneath the ice (territory claim?) http://nationalzoo.si.edu/SCBI/AquaticEcosystems/Antarctica/Seals/weddellsounds.wav
Need to breathe! • Keep ice holes open with their teeth in the winter • Wears down teeth over time shorter lifespan (15-20 years compared to 40 other seals) • Weddell Seal Carving Ice • Sources: • http://www.arkive.org/weddell-seal/leptonychotes-weddellii/video-10.html • http://nationalzoo.si.edu/scbi/AquaticEcosystems/Antarctica/Seals/weddellsealfactsheet.cfm • http://www.antarctica.gov.au/about-antarctica/fact-files/animals/seals-and-sea-lions/weddell-seals
Questions? • Powerpoint must be emailed before class on April 30th (10B) / May 2nd (10A) • You may choose to do a Prezi if you want to… the same rules apply • Presentations in classApril 30th – May 3rd
