Early wastewater treatment processes involved physical clean-up steps in addition to some form of chemical treatment. The first step was generally to settle out the solid materials including the sewage itself, human waste and other biological material, and heavy debris. This material was usually collected and then sold as fertilizer or dumped into nearby waterways. Next was to physically clean the remaining "sewage" water of particles suspended in it.
