  1. ;) OF MICE AND MEN. Who is the loneliest person on the ranch? By Luke & Abby

  2. Candy could be? Candy could be described lonely because; first off Candy reluctantly allows his dog to be shot. He does not want his dog to be shot, as his dog is his only friend and companion. But deep down he knows that it is best for the dog as the dog is only suffering and will only get worse and suffer more as time goes on. However now he has no-one as because of his job, the swamp buck (cleaner), he spends a lot of his time, as while the men go away to the fields he is back at the ranch cleaning up. Also, as Candy is quite old, he just does as he is told and keeps his head down further adding to his loneliness.

  3. Crooks could be? Another person who could be the loneliest person is, is the Crooks, the negro stable buck. One reason for this is because he’s black. When the books was written, racism was a big thing, and Crooks would have been treated as a lesser to all the other men. We know this because on (page … says). This shows that because he is black people treat him differently and people do not want to be his friend as he is black, leaving him to be lonely. However one night Lennie and Candy comes into Crook’s room, and Crooks is thrilled to have a companion, even though it is only for a night. Another things that suggest he is lonely is the fact that he does not live in the bunk house with the other men, but in the harness room close to the horses; ‘Crooks the negro stable buck, had his bunk in the harness room’. This shows that he lives in solitude and only interaction he has is with the horses. This shows us that he must be very lonely.

  4. Curley’s Wife could be? Curley’s wife could be described as the loneliest person on the ranch because when she is talking to Lennie in the barn, she talks about how she is lonely and that she never talks to anyone. ‘Why can’t I talk to you, I get awful lonely’ is what she says to Lennie while they are talking in the barn. ‘ You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad.’. This shows that she is very lonely and does not have the social interaction that she craves. This is why we get the feeling that she is desperate for attention. We know this because of she dreams of being in the movies, ‘Went out to the Riverside Dance Palace with him. He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural.’ If she was in the movie she would be very much in the public eye, and should not feel lonely as she does.

  5. So overall.. • As shown many characters in ‘Of Mice and Men’ could be portrayed as the loneliest person on the ranch. Overall we think that Crook’s is the lonely person on the ranch. This is because he can’t help being black and can’t help the race issues at the time of this book causing his loneliness due to everyone else, not him. We also feel sorry for Crook’s as he got so happy when Lennie and Candy came into his room that it shows he doesn’t chose or want to be lonely and would love to get on with everyone like ‘part of the gang’ as such. Another reason that we think Crook’s is the loneliest person on the ranch is because he doesn’t get much social interaction at all and most probably feels excluded from everyone else on the ranch so much so he doesn’t know what to say or do to fit in.
