  5. What is the Aim of this Study? While we want all seekers to be saved by grace, there is no grace if we perceive no sin.. Thus, the aim of this study is to help seekers see themselves as our Holy God sees them: utterly sinful and separated from our God. This realization brings about a desire for both forgiveness and repentance. Pray for the Holy Spirit to convict seekers in this study (John 16:8). John 16:8”When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:”

  7. SPIRITUAL BACKGROUND Romans 3:9-22 We are all under the power of sin. No one is righteous not even one(3:10) The whole world will be held accountable to God Only through faith in Jesus can we be made righteous in the sight of God. Romans 3:23 THE POINT OF THE PASSAGE There is no one that can claim to be with out sin We all fall short of God’s standards Only through Jesus, can we be justified JUST-IF-I’D never sinned THE PURPOSEFUL QUESTION How do you think the Jews would have felt hearing that they were no different than the Gentiles? What do you imagine it would be like standing in the presence of a perfect God? Have you ever compared yourself to others to justify your sinful behavior?

SPIRITUAL BACKGROUND Romans 6:15-22 Paul is teaching on how we use to be slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness As Christians, we have been set free from sin and become slaves of God The benefits that we reap from this new life leads to holiness and eternal life Romans 6:23 THE POINT OF THE PASSAGE There are eternal consequences to sin We reap what we sow: Life or Death Eternal life is a gift from God for those who live for him THE PURPOSEFUL QUESTION Why do so many chose to live in sin when the consequences are so high? How do you feel about both the warning and the gift that is given in this scripture? How should we live our lives with such a great gift awaiting those who are willing to live for God?

  11. SPIRITUAL BACKGROUND Luke 7:18-35 John the Baptist’ disciples approach Jesus wondering if he is the one that was to come. Jesus does miracles and begins to teach why the people rejected both John and Jesus They say that John is possessed by demons and Jesus is a glutton and drunkard because he eats with tax collectors and sinner. Then Jesus goes to a Pharisees house where he is treated better by the sinner than the “righteous”. THE POINT OF THE PASSAGE Jesus is a bridge between your sin and your potential for love. The more you appreciate your sinful indebtedness to Jesus; the more you will be grateful for his grace. The end result: you love much (i.e. Discipleship). Conversely, the less you appreciate your sinful indebtedness, the smaller your gratitude and the less you love. Luke 7:36-50 • THE PURPOSEFUL QUESTION • Is your attitude toward your sin more like Simon’s or more like the sinful woman’s? • How much are you in touch with your personal sinfulness? • Consider the most recent time you committed that sin; consider the first time; consider your attitude towards God each time you indulged that sin. Journals/discussions/ time lines all help increase one’s appreciation of our debt through sin.

SPIRITUAL BACKGROUND Mark 7:1-19 Jews are challenging Jesus’ disciples on their hands being defiled Jesus challenges the Pharisees and teachers of the law on their hearts being far from God Jesus teaches that true defilement comes from inside a person; their heart Mark 7:21-23 THE POINT OF THE PASSAGE Sin comes from our hearts Take ownership for sin! We are responsible for our own sin THE PURPOSEFUL QUESTION How can only looking at outside defilement prevent true change? What is the consequence of being unclean before God? Are their sins in your heart that keep you unclean before God?

DISCUSS THE SINS CATALOGED BY JESUS • In Your Groups: Discuss which sins in this list have you found to be the most challenging in to uproot from your heart? “For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.”

  15. SPIRITUAL BACKGROUND Galatians 5:13-18 We were called to be free. But not to use our freedom to indulge in sin. We are to walk but the spirit and not by the flesh Our flesh and our Spirit are in constant conflict with one another. We must be led by the Spirit Galatians 5:19-21 THE POINT OF THE PASSAGE Sin is Obvious! We know when we are sinning Those who live in sin will not inherit God’s Kingdom . THE PURPOSEFUL QUESTION When it comes to sin in your life, what daily conflicts do you struggle with between your flesh and your spirit? From the list of sin in this passage, which ones have you committed and/or presently committing? Be as specific as necessary to both explain and share about the sins listed

  16. DISCUSS THE SINS CATALOGED BY JESUS • In Your Groups: Discuss which sins in this list have you found to be the most challenging to change outwardly?

SPIRITUAL BACKGROUND James 4:13-16 Today or Tomorrow is not promised to us Our life is but a mist: we are here for a while and then we are gone We should not delay doing what we know is right for us to do James 4:17 THE POINT OF THE PASSAGE Sins of commission (sins you commit) vs. sins of omission (virtues you omit). A person may be guilty of a sin of omission by failing to do something which he is able to do and which he ought to do, by reason of a cause for which he is entirely responsible, as when a person knows that drinking to drunkness will incapacitate him, and yet drinks THE PURPOSEFUL QUESTION Is God calling you to change an area in your life that you have been putting off until tomorrow? What is it that you know the God would have you to do in order to have a deep relationship with Him?

SPIRITUAL BACKGROUND The Book of Isaiah The book is written to God’s people who have turned their backs on God God called his prophet, Isaiah, to preach a message to call his people back to Him The goal was for the nations to repent of their sins and to be restored to God Isaiah 59:1-2 THE POINT OF THE PASSAGE Your sin has made a separation between you and your God. We must understand the depth of your separation from your Father. God hides his face and ignores those who chose to live in sin THE PURPOSEFUL QUESTION Why would God not listen or save his people? How would you feel if God both ignored you and hid his face from you? Are there sins in your life that has caused separation between you and God?
