  1. TF section meetingHorizontal benchesActivities

  2. Contents • 2010 Activities • Sparedipoles • LHC ShuntedInterconnection test • OSQAR Experiment and PS Booster upgrade • Test benches Consolidation • Miscellaneous • 2011 ForeseenActivities

  3. LHC Consolidation • SpareMagnets Tests • On Dec. 9th 2010, 22/44 dipoles tested and qualified as “OK for the tunnel” • 14 of themsince 1st of June (since the CRYO shutdown ) as 10 werescheduled • In Sm18 today : SSS367 (D1 bench) + 6 dipoles to betested

  4. LHC ShuntedInterconnection • Mandate of MSC-TF: Ensure the protection and the instrumentation for the Shunt validation test. • 2 Magnets (Q8 and Q9) on bench D2 from July 2010 • Tests : • Thermal runaway : completedsuccessfully • Quench propagation : in progress • RRR measurements : PXI system validation (compared to NanoVoltmeter) • Current cycles : in progress shunt shunt

  5. OSQAR Experiment • TF section mandate : to train 2 dipoles to ultimatecurrent and ensure the protection • Photon regenerationexperimentperformedduring : • 4 days in Feb • 18 days in June and July • 8 days in Aug. PS Booster upgrade • Original PS Booster energy: 800MeV, 0.6T, 2700A RMS • Final upgrade: 2GeV, 1.12T, 5515A RMS • Tests up to 9 kA have been completed for >5000 cycles • High currents and high ramp rates require powerful converters. • => Cluster A of the SM18 test benches is actually equipped with a 14kA/61V capacity power converter that fulfills the requirements

  6. Test benches Consolidation • New acquisition systems • VME => PXI Bus • SUN replaced by PC (Windows and Linux) • Cluster E dedicated to validation tests • LF (1kHz max.) : 360 channels • HF (50kHz max.) : 160 channels • FGC2 Power convertors • All benches are nowequippedwith the same PC controls as the LHC. • Technical network • All protection and acquisition systems are been moved to TECNET.

  7. Miscellaneous • Magnetic measurements : • LHC current cycles characterization, with new ramp rates and maximum currents as required by the machine • Improvements of the FAME magnetic measurement system • Creation and management of the TF website • Visitors area and meeting room improvements

  8. 2011 Activities • Spares : • 22 Dipoles • 12 SSS • 3 Special SSS • SeparationDipoles and Inner Triplets : Priority to the D1L101 • Q8-Q9 Shunted test :Decision in January for additionnal tests. • OSQAR :6 weekswith 2 magnets @1.9K • Magneticmeasurements : LHC characterization and FAME improvement (SSSs and dipoles) • Consolidation • Keithleys to PXI (RRR, Loss and Splicemeasurements) => February 2011 • 7 HV racks to PXI => February 2011 • New Acquisition system (Block4 + Clusters SM18) • Creation of a new database • CRYO Shutdown :Scheduled in May 2011 (6 weeks)
