The History of French Wine • French wine is produced in several regions throughout France. • France has the world's second -largest total vineyard area behind Spain. • French wine traces its history in the 6th century BC . • The wines produced today range from expensive high-end wines sold internationally to more modest wines usually seen within France.

  3. Grapes and Wine • France is the source of many grape varieties (such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah) that are now planted throughout the world. • French winemaking practices and styles of wine have been adopted in other producing countries. • Some producers have benefited in recent years from rising prices and increase demand for some of the prestige wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux.

  4. Preparation for the Party • OK. We have a party this evening. So, what I need for fruit salad? A pear, an apple, an orange, a banana. • Do I need any oil? No, no oil. I need some yogurt for dressing. • Then some sort of cheese - Masdam, Gauda, Edam, Mozarella, Cheddar, maybe. • Oh, yes, a bar of chocolate to decorate the salad. • And I have to buy a bottle of white wine.

  5. The French Supermarket • Shop assistant: Good afternoon, madam. Can I help you? • Customer: Yes, I'd like a bottle of wine, please. • Shop assistant: Red or white wine? • Customer: Red, please. And not sweet. I prefer dry wine. • And I need some fruits - a kilo of apples, • three pears and one lemon, please. • Shop assistant: Anything else, madam? • Customer: Yes, a box of chocolate. • Shop assistant: Is that all? • Customer: Let me see. Oh, yes. Some cheese. Chedder cheese. • Shop assistant: How much would you like? • Customer: About 300 grams. • Shop assistant: Anything else, madam? • Customer: No. I think that's all. Thank you.

  6. Buying Wine • Shop assistant: Good afternoon. Can I help you? • Customer: Yes, please. I'd like three bottles of wine and a packet of biscuits. • Shop assistant: Anything else? • Customer: Yes, I'd like two bars of chocolate and a kilo of apples. • Shop assistant: Here you are. Is that all? • Customer: Yes, that’s all. . Can I buy by credit card? • Shop assistant: I'm sorry, but we don't take credit cards.

A Wine and Cheese Party • Parties "Wine and Cheese" were very popular in 1970th especially among young people. • But nowadays an invitation for such a party is quite spread. • Moreover it is in fashion again. • "Wine and cheese party" is fairly simple and cheap. • It lets the host to show his creativeness in choosing different wines and cheeses. • As for quests such a party gives a possibility to start a conversation with a discussion of wine and cheese quality, so to make friends easily.

  8. A Cheese Plate • The cheese plate is usually formed from five or more sorts of cheese. • The sorts of cheese for the classical cheese plate are selected from the cheese with less striking taste to the more saturated one. • If we imagine the plate is the face of a clock, the hard sorts of cheese are arranged at 6 o'clock closer to the guest. • Farther the soft sorts of cheese are placed, then cheeses with sharp smell and taste are put at 11 o'clock. • Next the blue cheeses with piquant taste and complex scented bouquet of smell come. • In the middle of the plate there are tender fresh cheeses. • It is customary to decorate the cheese plate with grapes, nuts and leaves of mint.

  9. At the Party • Girl: This is a lovely party, isn't it? • Man: Oh, yes, the food is delicious! • Girl: Yes, I love the eggs rolls and also the cheese sandwiches. I don't like tomato salad very much. But the chocolate cake is wonderful. • Man: And the beer is great. Do you like beer? • Girl: Well, to tell the truth not very much. I think I can have some more wine. Can you bring me a glass of red wine? • Man: Yes, sure.

  10. At the Cafe • Customer: Is this apple or grape juice? • Waiter: This is a beautiful dry wine from France "Chateau neuf du pape". It is well combined with mature cheeses and dark berries • Customer: Do you have white semi-sweet wine "Reinhessen Silvanter"? Waiter: We have Vourey which is like it and it is well combined with hard cheeses. Customer: Bring it please. Waiter: Just a moment.

  11. At the Restaurant • Englishman: Is this white wine or apple juice? • Waiter: It is apple juice, and this is white German wine. It is recommended to mature cheese, and also it is well combined with fruit. What would you prefer? • Englishman: I would choose red wine, and white wine and sparkling mineral water for the lady. • Lady: What sparkling mineral water have you got? • Waiter: Perie, Narzan (local water). • Lady: Narzan, please.
