The opportunities: the national maternity agenda • Women will have one named midwife who will oversee their care during pregnancy and after they have had their baby • Every woman has one-to-one midwife care during labour and birth • Parents-to-be will get the best choice about where and how they give birth • Arrangements to introduce new PbR • Introduce new outcome measures • Perinatal mortality • Patient reported outcome measures • % term babies admitted to NICU

  3. The risks • Fragmentation of commissioning • Competing providers • Disconnected strategic planning • Scarcity of focus, expertise and experience • New PbR may destabilise some health economies

  4. Making maternity matter • Win the hearts and minds of CCGs and H&WBs • Existing networks to stay strong and be proactive • Reinvigorate alliances between maternity services and women • The courage to speak truth to power
