  2. Anomaly – Noun • Irregularity • An anomaly in a person’s heartbeat should be investigated by a physician.

  3. Antagonism - Noun • Actively expressed hostility • Antagonism developed between the twins, James and John, after they discovered that each of them had asked the same girl to the dance.

  4. Antediluvian – ADJ • Extremely old – someone who lived before the biblical Flood, the “Great Deluge” • Young people today regard black and white TV as an antediluvian form of technology.

  5. Antidote - Noun • Medicine to counteract a poison or disease; something that relieves a harmful effect • Researchers are trying to find an antidote for the common cold, but so far they have only had limited success.

  6. Antiquated - ADJ • Old-fashioned; obsolete • Most people regard the phonograph as an example of an antiquated technology.

  7. Apathy – Noun • Indifference • Apathy about social and political issues often occurs when people feel that these issues do not directly concern them.

  8. Appease – Verb • Soothe; relieve • The candy bar that Sharon ate appeased her hunger.

  9. Apprehension - Noun • Fear • Most people think about their own eventual death with apprehension.

  10. Arbitrary – ADJ • Randomly chosen • The decision to use the color green to mean “Go” is an arbitrary one.

  11. Archaic - ADJ • Ancient; out of date – having to do with an earlier form of language or speech • The typewriter is regarded by many people today as an archaic form of technology.

  12. Ardent - ADJ • Very enthusiastic; passionate • Ardent Democrats and Republicans usually vote for the persons nominated by their parties.

  13. Arrogance - Noun • Overbearing pride • Shy people are sometimes accused of arrogance because they seem haughty and aloof.
