  2. 1 Pet. 3:14, “But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled.”

  3. I. UNTRUTHS CONCERNING SUFFERING

  4. 1. All Suffering Comes From God • Matt. 5:45, “That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”

  5.  ”And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord” (Job 1:12). • Satan is all about one thing. Making you suffer!

  6. 2. Becoming a Christian Will Stop the Suffering • Psa. 9:13, “Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death.”

  7. 1 Cor. 3:15, “If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

  8. People Suffer Because of Sin • When Herod killed all those babies in Judea in Matt. 2:16, what sins did they commit to deserve such suffering? • Yes, suffering came into this world because of the sins of Adam & Eve, but sin is not always the incubus in all suffering.

  9. Why is it that so many picture God with this giant whip ready to discipline? I picture a gentle father showering his children with love and mercy!

  10. III. TRUTHS CONCERNING SUFFERING

  11. GOD SUPPLIES AN ESCAPE(An Escape Hatch for Temptation, and a Enduring Strength when faced with adversity) • 1 Cor. 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

  12. CHRISTIANS NEVER SUFFER ALONE • 1 Cor. 12:26, “And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.”

  13. SOMEBODY ALWAYS SUFFERS MORE

  14. 2 Cor. 11:23-28, “Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.   Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.   Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.   Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.” 

  15. SUFFERING HAS ITS REWARDS • Phil. 3:8, “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.”

  16. 2 Thess. 1:5, “Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer.”

  17. FOR THE CHRISTIAN SUFFERING HAS AN ENDING • Rev. 21:4, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

  18. FOR THE DISOBEDIENT IT WILL NEVER END • Jude 1:7, “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”

  19. Rev. 20:10, “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”

  20. IV. THE TALENT TO OVERCOME SUFFERING

  21. 1. Draw Nigh To God • James 4:8, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”

  22. 2. Depend on Jesus to See You Through • Matt. 11:28-30, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” 

  23. Heb. 13:5, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

  24. 3. Get Devotedto Reading & Prayer • Psa. 119:148, “Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.”

  25. 2 Sam. 12:16-23, “David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.   And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.   And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died.

  26. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?  

  27. But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.  Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. 

  28. Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.   And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?   But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”

  29. THREE FACTS • 1) David in one of the worse crisis of his life turned to God. (A child is sick) • 2) David accepted God’s decision. (The child’s life was taken) • 3) David accepted the reality of the situation. (He could not bring the child back but he could one day be with the child in the next life).
