  1. Welcome to 5th Grade Curriculum Night in Room 204!

Philosophy & Expectations • Teaching problem solving and thinking skills (“Be a problemsolver”) • Teaching to the various learning styles • Lowell School takes FLIGHT • QUALITY Work! • TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) … team players (students, parents, Mrs. Uthe, Miss Youngberg, Miss Jobe, Mrs. Melton) • 5U’s Parliament of OWLS (Organized, Working, Learning Students) • “Gentle nudges” • Focus on the POSITIVE! • High standards • Always here for the students.

Study Habits & Communication • Assignment notebook signed and looked at daily by parent/guardian in acknowledgement of complete student work. • Students are to fill in EVERY assignment, even if they have already completed it • Assignment notebooks will be checked daily by me • Homework and Reading minutes assigned on a regular basis • Homework, Quiz, Test Corrections • Tests signed • Parent help with homework and projects • Contact me by phone or by e-mail: 630-682-2085 X 6334 OR Denise.Uthe@cusd200.org • Ongoing communication is important • Weekly newsletter, “What’s New in 5U”

  5. Homework Expectations & Positive Reinforcement I believe in positive reinforcement and a positive classroom environment. This helps create a more productive school year intellectually, emotionally and socially for each student. Students receive verbal praise, written praise and/or special privileges (raffle and team/class incentives) for their accomplishments. I also believe in teaching responsibility. The fifth graders are responsible for turning in their assignments on time, being organized, maintaining accurate assignments in their assignment notebook and being prepared for class.

Grade 5 Human Relationship Strand Identify physical, emotional, social and cultural factors affecting growth and development Reproduction as part of the human life cycle Students discuss the physical changes of puberty in single gender groups- - girls learn about menstruation and become aware of bodily changes that occur during puberty - boys become aware of bodily changes that occur during puberty -students learn about the human reproductive system List positive factors that contribute to self esteem during puberty Recognize that parents are a resource to consult with questions about reproduction
