SAM HOUSTON: President of the Texas RepublicInaugural address October 22. 1836Treaties of peace and amity (friendship) and the maintenance of good faith with the Indians, (is) the most rational ground on which to obtain their friendship. Abstain (keep away) … from aggression, establish commerce with the different tribes, supply their useful and necessary wants, maintain even handed justice with them, and natural reason will teach them the unity of our friendship. MIRABEAU LAMAR: President of the Texas Republic Address to the Texas Congress December 21, 1838 ... As long as we continue to exhibit our mercy without showing our strength, so long will the Indian continue to bloody the edge of the tomahawk… If the wild cannibals of the woods will not desist (stop)from their massacres: if they will continue to war upon us with the ferocity of Tigers and Hyenas, it is time we should retaliate (fight back) … not in the murder of their women and children, but in … an exterminating war upon their warriors.
