  1. IT Roundtable – Dec 15th 2009 in your enterprise

  2. History • Why is it named Ubuntu? • South African ethical ideology meaning “humanity towards others” • What is it based off? • Current release of debian (unstable branch) • Who is backing it? • Canonical, Mark Shuttleworth

  3. Versions Current release is 9.10 Most current LTS release is 8.04

  4. Why is Ubuntu different? • Based off the idea of being easy to use • Features focus on usability • 6 month release cycle • Newer packages & software • Many derivative works • mint / edubuntu / kubuntu / mythbuntu • Sold on pre-built systems!

  5. Why would you pick Ubuntu? • Easy to install • Easy to customize • Many many software choices • Good driver support with *newish* hardware • Ability to get professional support (+ cost) • Free!

  6. Stand out features • Open office default software • Notifications (similar to growl for OSX) • Synaptic Package manager *** • Thousands of free software choices • Near infinite customizability • Better inherent security Vs. Windows • Ability to install off USB stick / CD / network

  7. New features to 9.10 • Software center revamp • Empathy as default chat software • Firefox 3.5 • F-Spot Photo Manger • Ubuntu One cloud storage • Ext4 by default! • Apparmor • Much more…

  8. So what’s the deal with support?!? • Three levels of support from canonical (desktop) • Basic / Advanced / Professional • £ 34.73 / £ 72.63 /  £ 138.03 • 9x5 phone support • Email support • Dell also offers support for 60$ / year

  9. I am assuming there is server support? • Yep. • Two levels 9-5 and 24-7 •  £ 473.69 and  £ 1,736.87  / Year • Both levels of support include landscape • Web based systems management

  10. What is landscape? Web based administration that covers software updates and many other administrative functions Monitor all servers with one easy website from anywhere

  11. Other administrations options • Webmin • CLI via SSH / telnet • Ubuntu Server Manager (when it updates) • App Armor

  12. 5 Computer Network Price Comparison As we can see, for a 5 person network there is a savings of nearly $3,500 in licensing costs associated with running Microsoft products. Add in terminal server licenses in a 2 server environment and watch the price jump. Or maybe an exchange server. $3,500 buys plenty of support…

  13. Demo • Mint Linux 192.168.3.116 • Ubuntu 9.10 192.168.3.129 • Server 9.10 192.168.3.110 • Server 8.04 LTS 192.168.3.144 • Netbook Remix 192.168.3.133
