  4. James Madison • Construction of the National Road begins

  5. James Monroe • 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty- buys Florida from Spain for $5 million • 1823 Monroe Doctrine • Declared America would oppose any new European colonies in any of the Americas and would use force to keep Europeans away • 1825 • Erie Canal opened on Oct. 26th

  6. Andrew Jackson • 1830 Indian Removal Act • Allowed the Federal government to pay the Indians to move west

  7. Martin Van Buren • 1838: Trail of Tears • Sends General Winfield Scott to remove the Cherokees from their homes and push them west to the Oklahoma Indian Territory.

  8. John Tyler • 1841 • Pre-emptive Act (pre cursor to Homestead Act) • Gave squatters the right to buy up to 160 acres of land before the claim jumpers or speculators. • Immigration increased during the 1840’s due to the availability of inexpensive or free land. • March 1845 • Started the annexation process for Texas.

  9. James K. Polk • June 1846 1. England and America compromise on the Oregon Country, setting the boundary between the British and America at the 49° N Parallel 2. Mexican War 1846-1847: Called America’s War of aggression by Americans. *Civil Disobedience…an example would be Henry David Thoreau’s refusal to pay taxes to support the war. • 1853 3. Gadsen Purchase- $10 million • A strip of land along the Southern Edge of the present-day states of Arizona and New Mexico.
