  1. Series: Critical Doctrine • I have started this series for a very important reason. • I see the need to make clear not only to you, but to myself, what the most crucial and vital doctrines of Christianity are, so that we can be sure we are traveling on the right path. • Multitudes of professed Christians around the globe are perplexed when it comes to doctrine and clearly articulating their faith. • Because of this, many Christians are believing the most absurd and heretical beliefs, and due to this we have seen an incredible increase of cults which claim to be Christian.

  2. The Deity of Christ • One of the easiest ways to spot Christian cults is by their denial of Jesus Christ as being God. • They deny that He is the actual Son of God, and so they demote Jesus to being just a man who was highly esteemed by God. • They then reject His virgin birth and His death and resurrection. • Therefore the power and impact of the atonement blood of Christ is washed away and of no effect in the Christian’s life. • So in this series we are going to get to the heart of what true Christian doctrine is, and this is why

Importance of Doctrine • Titus 2:1 “You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.” (NIV) • Titus 1:9 “He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.” (NIV) • 2Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” (NIV) • 1Timothy 4:16 “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” (NIV)

The Deity of Christ • Today I will focus on revealing to you the Scriptures which speak of Christ as the one and only Son of God. • There are numerous quotes in relation to this subject, and even though cults will try to tell you that they are translation errors, please understand, that the official reason Jesus was crucified was the charge made by the Pharisees that “This man claimed to be the Son of God.” • I believe that the doctrine of Christology is the most critical of all the doctrines and the one doctrine which will be continually attacked in years to come and even threatens the survival of of Christianity.

The Deity of Christ • Charles Ryrie said: Many in our day deny the deity of Christ, knowing that in doing so they are undermining the central aspect of Christianity because they have removed from it the divine Saviour. The denial is not new, for even in the early church there were those who did so: Ebionites, dynamic Monarchians, and the Arians... Today those who deny His full deity regard Jesus either as a great man (to be followed but not worshipped), a good man (who had the courage to die for His convictions) or a man more advanced than any other in His time. Along with such views goes a denial of the Biblical accounts of His miraculous birth, death and resurrection.

The Claims of Jesus • Those who deny Jesus as being God’s Son will assert that Jesus never claimed to be God, it was His followers who made the claim. • These cults really do not consider the Bible as authoritative but feel free to question Scripture as to its reliability and twist it into the mould of their own theology. • So let’s see what Jesus says about Himself and then we will look at what else was said of Christ’s deity by the disciples.

The Claims of Jesus • John 5:17-18But Jesus answered them, “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. (KJV) • John 10:30-33 Jesus said, “I and my Father are one.” Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, “Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?” The Jews answered him, saying, “For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.” (KJV) • Charles Ryrie said, “Those who heard this statement understood the force of such a claim, for they accused Him of blasphemy.” • When someone claims Christ to be a mere man, with that mindset he stands with the Pharisees who condemned Jesus for the sin of blasphemy by claiming to be the Son of God.

  8. The Claims of Jesus • John 10:36-39 Jesus said: “Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.” Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand. (KJV)

The Claims of Jesus • Matthew 26:62-65 And the high priest arose, and said unto him, “Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?” But Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, “I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus saith unto him, “Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, “He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.” 26:66 What think ye? They answered and said, “He is guilty of death.” (KJV)

The Claims of the Disciples • So not only did Jesus claim to be the Christ, and equal with God, and was crucified for the sin of blasphemy, but the early followers of Christ all believed the same. • John 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” • It is extremely basic theology to understand that the author here is speaking about Christ as being the Word and that He was with God in the beginning and that He is God.

The Claims of the Disciples • Closely related to John 1:1-2 in explanation of Christ’s deity is Colossians 1:14-18 • In whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins: who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him; and he is before all things, and in him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (American Standard)

The Claims of the Disciples • John 20:27-28 Then saith he to Thomas, “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.” And Thomas answered and said unto him, “My LORD and my God.” (KJV) • This is no light statement. You can’t speak it away by arguing that in the original language Thomas did not mean what he said. • But when Thomas touched the living Christ he immediately acknowledged His deity.

The Claims of the Disciples • Philippians 2:5-6 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of (in the very nature of) God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. (KJV) • Matthew 16:15-17 He saith unto them, “But whom say ye that I am?” And Simon Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered and said unto him, “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” (KJV)

  14. The Claims of the Disciples • 1John 2:22-23 “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.” (KJV) • 1John 4:14-15 “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” (KJV)

The Claims of the Disciples • 1John 5:5 “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” (KJV) • 1John 5:20 “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” (KJV) • Key Scripture: Colossians 2:9 “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” (KJV)

The Claims of the Disciples • 1John 5:10-13 “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (KJV)

The Claims of the Disciples • Galatians 4:4 “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” (KJV) • These are but a few of the claims, there are numerous more claims made regarding His deity by both Christ and the disciples. • But arguably the most famous Scripture in the Bible proclaims the deity of Christ.

  18. The Deity of Christ • John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” • JW’s, Christadelphians, Mormons, Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists, and basically every other cult and religion on earth will deny all these Scriptures, but what sets true Christianity apart from all these other belief systems is that we stand with Christ and the early disciples, and our forefathers in relation to the doctrine of Christ’s deity. • He is God, the second person of the Godhead, and He is as God as God is. • And in addition to His God nature He gained a new nature and He became human, in an effort to reach sinful humanity so as to redeem them by His acceptable sacrifice on the cross.
