  10. Reading a whole novel in class is time consuming and may not be possible. Here are some suggestions for streamlining the process: Pull specific key excerpts from the novel. Students read novel outside of class and use sticky notes or a note-taking strategy to cite key ideas. Use independent reading books to make connections. (Will require deep planning.) From your packet, read the excerpts provided from The Hunger Games.

  11. The Media The Prompt: After watching the documentary Inside North Korea, what comparisons can you make between the North Korean government and the Capitol of Panem in the Hunger Games?

  12. List the key characteristics of District 12 and North Korea.Put a star by characteristics that are similar.

  13. The Blog Suggestions for writing: Students pre-write blog response on a Word Document and save before posting. Respond to student posts and probe for deeper answers. Require students to question and respond to peer postings. Suggestions for technology: Provide lessons for online etiquette. Discuss online safety, only use first name, don’t identify school or location, etc. Generate a list of student user names and passwords for the blog, they will forget.

  14. More Blog Prompts Entertainment Media The Hunger Games is broadcast and required for all the districts of Panem to see. Many aspects of the Hunger Games are controlled by the Gamemakers. What comparisons can you make between today's reality TV and the Hunger Games? Government Oppression The Hunger Games is primarily designed to oppress and control the districts in Panem. What other forms of the Capitol's control do the people in District 12 experience?
