CHOOSING THE FACTORY BELT For installation at the factory, all 3 of these manufacturers supply vehicle manufacturers with timing belts. You may truly see the OEM logo printed right alongside the manufacturer logo if you buy an OEM belt from a dealer.
VW AG / CONTITECH At a VW dealership, this belt was purchased. Certain markings mean that contitech manufactured this belt for VW to sell via their dealership network. All 3 of these manufacturers supply factory belts, so all of them will be “genuine” / “factory” quality belts, designed to endure the factory service interval.
CONTITECH VS. CONTINENTAL Continental is a global brand made up of a wide variety of rubber-focused industries. They even make tires for bikes; you have probably seen continental tires at your local tire shop! For all sorts of belt manufacturing, contitech is the division & trade name– timing, serpentine, v-belts, etc. You can be sure it is a Contitech branded belt if you see that a Continental belt is advertised.
THE DAYCO QUESTION The white-colored interior is famous for the timing belt that is produced by Dayco timing belts. It is made up of a special proprietary Kevlar weave. A patented tooth profile is used by Dayco belts. You can see that the middle of the tooth is depressed, making a kind of “W” shape if you look at the tooth.
These exclusive qualities make their belts extra durable than their competitors. In our experience, through the full-service interval, belts by Gates & Continental are just as dependable. (For obvious reasons, we don’t test belts beyond the service interval, & neither should you!) The exclusive Dayco design does come with a drawback, however – suppleness. Brand new Dayco belts are much less flexible, & therefore much harder to work with than belts from Gates / Continental. This may create installing a Daycobelt much harder, depending on the application. For example, on the ALH engine.
