Cultures Spread pg 62 - 63 Assimilation – the process in which the culture traits of newcomers to a country become similar to those people in the new country • Migration is another factor of cultural diffusion • When a person from one society moves to a new society they may give up their traditional ways and assimilate to the new country
Cultures Spread pg 62 - 63 Acculturation – when two societies have contact with one another for a long Period of time and they exchange culture traits • This can take place when one group of people move into another country to conquer or occupy the other society • As a result the more powerful society may force its culture on the other society, but the dominate society may also adopt traits from the other society as well • This took place when Western European countries settled in North America • (England, France, Spain, Portugal) • These countries forced their culture onto the Native Americans
Cultures Spread pg 62 - 63 • Religion is another culture trait that has spread throughout the world • Christianity started in Southwaet Asia and spread throughout Europe as a result of the Roman Empire stretching into the region • Islam also started in Southwest Asia and spread through cultural diffusion • Buddhism started in India and has spread to Japan and Korea
