Aims & Objectives • Most people think that businesses only have one aim and objective. Which is? • To make a profit. • In actual fact most businesses have many aims and objectives which may include: • Survival • Profit maximisation • Increase sales • Expansion • To be environmentally friendly
The aims of four different businesses: • A local council – to provide a range of services that enhances the quality of life of the population it serves. • A theme park – to provide a piece of magic to everyone who visits, young or old. • A cancer charity – to raise the awareness of this condition and to provide the support to continue a programme of research and education. • A removals company – to provide customers with a worry-free solution to their house move.
What are the aims of the Smoothie bar? Suggest any key words you think should be integrated into the aim. Aim
Objectives: • To be really useful to a business, objectives should be SMART. This stands for: • Specific – explain exactly what is to be achieved; • Measurable – a form of measurement i.e. % to see what has been achieved; • Achievable – should provide a challenge (to motivate) but should be capable of being delivered; • Realistic – it should be reasonable to expect that the objective can be met by those responsible for it; • Timely/Time-bound – it should have a defined timeline setting out by when it should be achieved.
Example: The Fire Service Aim: To save lives Objectives: Remember they need to be SMART Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely/Time bound A couple of examples of objectives may be – • 98% of all road traffic accidents responded to within 20 minutes • All staff updated on life-saving techniques every 6 months
Mission Statement • A mission statement is a brief statement of the purpose. • Companies sometimes use their mission statement as an advertising slogan, but the intention of a genuine mission statement is to keep members and users aware of the organisation's purpose. • "To enable people and businesses throughout the world to realize their full potential."—Microsoft
The Facts • According to research, the average person in the UK eats less than 3 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, instead of the recommended 5. • Obesity is rising among children. In the past ten years it has doubled in six-year-olds (to 8.5 per cent) and trebled among 15-year-olds (to 15 per cent). • In response to some of the issues highlighted the school canteen is considering opening a Smoothie Bar.
What is a Smoothie? A Smoothie is a blended drink made from natural ingredients; usually fruits and juices but sometimes other natural flavours such as vegetables, peanut butter, or even green tea. The Smoothie Bar • The Smoothie Bar will sell a wide range of Smoothie with a minimum of 2-3 portions of fruit and vegetables in each drink at an affordable price.
